A little background on Poynton:

The Poynton area has been settled since Anglo-Saxon times. Named variously in the past as Ponynton or Poynington, it was missed off the Domesday Book, and was first recorded as a manor in 1289. There is coal relatively close to the surface in this part of the Cheshire Plain, and mining for it continued until 1935, when the Anson Colliery finally closed for good. With 74 pits, it was once the largest coalfield in Cheshire. The Anson Colliery is now a Coal and Engine Museum.
